Syllabus
Introduction to Carpentry: Carpentry tools, wood for carpentry work, nails, hinges and fixing material, wood work joints, doors and windows, aluminum sliding windows, glazing, slope roof and false ceiling.
Building Structures: Design criteria, primary loads: dead loads and live loads, wood specifications, flexure and axially loaded wood structures, compression steel members, flexural steel members, combined forces on steel members, steel connections.
Materials and Properties: Introduction, exporter/importer, wood procurement, supply chain, wood reclamations, processing of wood, types of handicraft products.
Carpentry Techniques: Hardwood and softwood trees, drying timber, attack by wood boring insects, paint and varnishes, methods applying preservatives, plasterboards, storage and stacking, holding equipment (tools & devices).
Finishing Techniques: Preparing the wood surface, tools for applying finishes, oil finishes, staining wood, filling the pores, water-based finishes, repairing finishes.
Advanced Carpentry Techniques: Linear measurement, weathering and maintenance, construction of floors, concrete floors incorporating timber, flooring, stages of construction, steel Roofing Square, tubular scaffold, system scaffold.
